A unique medical project is being launched in Brno

Brno physicians have joined forces with the world renown American Mayo Clinic to prepare a project by which the site of St. Anne’s Faculty Hospital in Brno will grow into a unique medical workplace, with the title International Centre for Clinical Research. The centre should provide jobs for 420 permanent employees, of which, roughly 400 will be specialised professionals (doctors, engineers, qualified nurses). “This is not a matter of a hospital which will compete with the other hospitals. It is a strategic project for involving the Czech Republic in top medical research. Brno will become the home of one of the best centres for researc, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular and other illnesses in Europe” explained cardiologist Tomáš Kára, who has been working at the Mazo Clinic since 2001 and who is one of the main instigators of the whole. At the beginning of July the project recieved approval from the Czech government at one of its sittings. A definite decision should be known in the following days or weeks. State support is a key issue for the project organisers and representatives of the Mayo Clinic. “ Financing the project from Czech state funds is a basic precondition so that the centre can primarilily serve the long- term strategic aims of the Czech Republic and and in the area of research, development and industrial application and so research results can be the intellectual property of the Czech Republic” says Kára. The first project of this type in the world is the mutual work of specialists from St. Anne’s Faculty Hospital and the prestige worldwide Mayo Clinics who are supplying the know-how. Brno was chosen as the location for the centre in strong competition from towns in eight European states, among them being Germany and Great Britain. “During the next ten years great medical discoveries are expected which have the potential to significantly change the possibilities available to medical care. For example, work is being carried out on developing artificial organs obtained from genetically modified animals” explained Kára when talking about the proposed new centre. This unique workplace, made up of three buildings, will be built in the grounds of the Faculty Hospital on Pekařská street. Also participating in the project will be the Institute of Technical Engineering Academy of Science, the Veterinary School of Masaryk University and the Technical University. Foreign companies interested in collaboration with centre are GE Healthcare Technologies, IBM, Johnson& Johnson and Pfizer. Source: Zpravodaj JIC, "www.jic.cz":[ http://www.jic.cz].
