Argentina to export biodiesel to Europe

A small Argentinean biotech firm, Oilfox, signed a five year contract to start exporting in April or May 2006 one million litres of soybean-derived biodiesel to a German fuel distribution company.
Jorge Kaloustian, president of Oilfox, said demand for biodiesel currently exceeds production capacity, not because of shortages in soybean farming, but due to limitations in the manufacture chain. Exports could therefore increase substantially in the future. This contract, although modest, represents the debut of Argentina in the world market of biofuels.
According to the latest ISAAA Global Status Report, almost the entire production (98-99%) of soybean crop in Argentina is composed of herbicide tolerant soybeans.
