Austrianova discovers new therapeutic for cancer gene therapy

Date: 1.3.2006

The Viennese biotech company, Austrianova, together with its partner at the Research Institute for Virology and Biomedicine, University of Veterinary Medicine have shown that a gene from a bacteriophage (a virus infecting bacteria), can be used for the treatment of cancer. The Department of Therapeutic Genes & Delivery Systems at Austrianova, headed by Dr. Christine Hohenadl, have shown for the first time that a bacteriophage protein, called holin, can destroy human breast cancer cells. This discovery could form the basis for a new treatment of solid tumours and has been published in the international peer reviewed scientific publication “Journal of Gene Medicine” .
