Gene modification spawns new breed of supermouse

Date: 14.11.2007

A **genetic modification** of a single **metabolism gene** helped scientists create a new breed of **supermouse** that can run faster and longer than ever possible. And while the researchers are wary of the potential implications in drug development, they agree that in the future their work could lead to new performance-enhancing therapies that could make athletes more competitive than many had dreamed. Team-leader Richard Hanson at Case Western Reserve University says that altering a gene in glucose metabolism gives the mice better use of body fat for energy. Interestingly, there was no corresponding increase in lactose acid, a condition that causes muscle cramps in athletes.
