Genetic engineering research promises veg diet with high Omega-3 content

Scientists in the city are engaged in including **Omega-3 fatty acids** in regular diet by **genetically modifying** certain **vegetables** to prevent **brain** and **heart disorder**.
Currently experiments are on with tomatoes, ladies fingers and rice. The institute has a joint venture with Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Co Ltd, Jalna, National Chemical Laboratory and All India Coordinated Research Project, Linseed, Nagpur. “We are in the process of transferring Omega-3 genes to tomato and ladies finger. The final product will be ready in 3 years. It would then pass through regulatory procedures,” Ranjekar said.
