Description: | Buchnera sp. APS is an endocellular bacterial symbiont harboured by pea aphids, Acyrthosiphon pisum. Buchnera belongs to the gamma-Proteobacteria, closely related to the Enterobacteriaceae family. The mutualism between Buchnera and its host is so obligate that neither associant can independently reproduce. The first for symbiotic bacteria, we determined the complete genome sequence of Buchnera sp. APS by the whole genome random sequencing method (Shigenobu et al. Nature 407, 81-86 (2000)). The genome of Buchnera sp. APS is comprised of one 640,681 base pair chromosome and two small plasmids. Our analysis of the genome revealed the characteristic gene repertoire of Buchnera, which is quite different from those of free-living and parasitic bacteria. The characteristic gene set shows the tight mutualism between Buchnera and the aphid hosts at the genomic level. In this website, we provide the genome data of Buchnera sp. APS in the comprehensive framewarks. In addition, We will link the genome data to the ongoing our studies, the comparative genomic analysis and the proteome analysis. |
