The Antwerp Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) has organised an annual international colloquium on main issues relating to health in developing countries for more than 40 years. One of the major objectives is to assemble and confront scientists and experts from different disciplines, and from the North and the South. One third of the world’s population is infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the cause of tuberculosis (TB). Buruli ulcer, caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans, is the third most common mycobacterial disease in humans after TB and leprosy. This terrible ulcerative skin disease is endemic in foci throughout Africa, the Americas, Australia and Asia. The main objective of the colloquium is “Strengthening the interaction of research, health care and disease control through interdisciplinary and international exchanges”.
