The Institute of Biotechnology AS CR offers positions for bachelor, master and PhD students. Also two post-doc positions are open.
If you are looking for an interesting work in a young and dynamic lab, if you want to learn a lot and make a difference, come and join us in Laboratory of Structural Biology at the Institute of Biotechnology, Academy of Sciences.
We offer a bachelor thesis project in “X-ray crystallography in the design of inhibitors of glutamate carboxypeptidase II (GCPII)” project. In our lab we study GCPII as a target for treatment of a variety of neurological disorders and a marker for imaging and therapy of prostate cancer. We established cooperation with several medicinal chemistry labs (ex. Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Yale University). The bachelor student will learn basics of biochemical and molecular biology techniques and the main focus will be on in silico analysis of X-ray structures relevant for rational design of GCPII inhibitors.
For master thesis we offer the topic “Structure-function studies of histone deacetylases” project. The aim of the project will be expression and characterization of histone deacetylases (HDACs). HDACs play crucial role in many physiological processes including epigenetics, protein degradation, cell motility, and receptor signaling. The work will contribute to understanding the function of these proteins in vitro as well as in the physiological context. The diploma student will learn variety of techniques including cloning, mutagenesis, heterologous protein expression in various systems (E.coli, K.lactis, insect and mammalian cells), protein purification and characterization, enzymology, inhibition studies, and X-ray crystallography.
We are looking for a highly motivated PhD. student to join our young and dynamic research team cooperating with laboratories in US and Germany. Research in the lab focuses on structure-function studies of non-mammalian orthologs of human glutamate carboxypeptidase II (GCPII). GCPII is a metallopeptidase that is increasingly recognized as a target of therapeutic interventions in a variety of neurological disorders as well as a marker for imaging and therapy of prostate cancer. The successful candidate will participate in a PhD program at the Department of Biochemistry at Faculty of Natural Sciences, Charles University in Prague and work on the project is supported by several grant applications. The doctoral fellow will learn various molecular biology, enzymology, structural biology, protein crystallography. We offer a highly collaborative atmosphere in the Laboratory of Structural Biology, Institute of Biotechnology, AS CR.

Laboratory of Molecular Pathogenetics at Institute of Biotechnology Academy of Sciences Czech Republic invites applications for a postdoctoral research position starting October, 2012. We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow with a strong background in molecular biology to study epigenetic regulation networks in heart development and cardiac responses to diabetic environment. The successful candidate has completed a PhD, DDS, MD (or equivalents) no earlier than March 28, 2008 and no later than August 31, 2012. A 2 year minimum commitment is required. We offer a highly competitive salary, stimulating and friendly environment with a focus on career growth. Please submit your CV, bibliography, statement of research interests, and the names (with e-mail and telephone numbers) of three references to Gabriela Pavlinkova, PhD, Institute of Biotechnology AS CR, Videnska 1083, Prague 4, CZ-142 20, Czech Republic E-mail: gpavlinkova@img.cas.cz
Laboratory of Biomolecular Recognition of the Institute of Biotechnology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic looks for a self-motivated postdoctoral fellow. The successful candidate has established scientific record in measurement of thermodynamic and kinetic characteristics of stability and interactions of proteins and/or nucleic acids. Experience with techniques of molecular and cellular biology, mainly production and purification of recombinant proteins, is an advantage.
The fellow will work in a newly established group studying biomolecular recognition on projects with medical and biotechnological impact. More information can be obtained from Bohdan Schneider, the group leader at bohdan(at)img.cas.cz or http://www.structbio.eu/BS. We offer a highly competitive salary and provide funds for a three months research stay outside the Czech Republic.
The successful candidate has completed doctoral studies (PhD degree or equivalent) no earlier than March 28 2008 and no later than August 31, 2012. Electronic application (motivation letter and curriculum vitae) send to btu-office(at)img.cas.cz. The position is supported by Operational Program Education for Competitiveness from European Social Fund and the budget of the Czech Republic for period October 2012 - June 2015.
