Parkinson's Disease
Parkinson´s disease is the second most common neurodegeneration after Alzheimer´s disease. Drug treatment for Parkinson´s has only short-lived beneficial effects, and researchers have had difficulty obtaining sufficient supplies of dopamine-producing cells (dopamine is the key brain chemical missing in Parkinson´s patients) from foetal tissue for use in brain transplants. Scientists are therefore looking for ways to treat Parkinson´s disease by using the regenerative power of brain stem cells which would produce dopamine when implanted into the brain.]
