Description: | The National Park has been proclaimed on July 1, 1991 by Order of the Government of the Czech Republic No. 164/1991 CoL. The begin of the protection of the area of the middle stream of Dyje dates back to 1978. At that time the Protected Landscape Area of Podyjí covering 103 sq km (40 sq mi) has been proclaimed. Its greater part belonged to the border zone, the access of which was forbidden for turist public. In view of the remarkable scientific qualities of the area s nature, moves began in 1989, after the change of political climate, to re-classsify Podyjí as a national park. In 1991 two new national parks have been proclaimed - Šumava and Podyjí. As for its area, Podyjí is the smallest national park of the CR - 63 sq km, its protection zone covers 29 sq km. The NP Podyjí is situated between the towns Znojmo and Vranov nad Dyjí, along the Austrian state border. Not later than January 1, 2000 the National Park Thayatal will be proclaimed on the right Austrian riverside of Dyje thus creating a unique bilateral area of European importance. |
