Position announcment: Laboratory Technician

Type of job: full-time

We are seeking a highly motivated technician to join our international team studying trophic networks in a rainforest in Borneo. The succesful candidate will provide technical support for the project  „Biodiversity and Land Use Impacts on Tropical Ecosystem Function (BALI)” (NERC, UK). The project focuses on the trophic interactions between predatory ants and their termite prey in experimental plots in Borneo, although the advertised position is based entirely in the Czech Republic.

Work will be carried out in collaboration with the Principle Investigator (PI) Dr. Simon Segar, and several international collaborators including Dr. Kate Parr (University of Liverpool) and Dr. Paul Eggleton (Natural History Museum, London). Duties will include the isolation of genomic DNA for next generation sequencing, routine PCR, insect sorting and project management.

Salary will be CZK 18,000-20,000 per month for at least six months, the exact duration and time allocation are flexible and can be set to six months full time or one year part time, for example. The salary is enough to ensure good living standards in the Czech Republic where the living costs are generally low. The position is ideally suited to a recent graduate or post-graduate seeking work experience, or a returning parent, for example.

Minimum qualifications:

  1. Graduate degree from a recognised university in biology or ecology or extensive working experience
  2. Experience in laboratory research, basic molecular methods knowledge (DNA extraction, PCR, electrophoresis... etc.)
  3. Ability to use computers and related software applications
  4. Ability to work independently and as part of an active team with people from different disciplines and background
  5. Excellent written and communications skills
  6. Good knowledge of English

Preferred qualifications:

  1. Knowledge of next generation sequencing analysis
  2. Basic proficiency with statistical analysis and/or the R programming environment
  3. Knowledge of best practices in data management

Other information:

Ceske Budejovice, the site of ENTU, is a medium-sized town ca. 150 km south of Prague with 100,000 inhabitants and a relaxed atmosphere. Both the town and the surrounding countryside provide numerous opportunities for leisure activities.
