Description: | The FBN investigates the functional biodiversity of farm animals because of its crucial basis for sustainable agriculture, as an important potential for a lasting security of global food and as an essential fundament of life. The object of the research of FBN is the farm animal, considered an essential element of both man’s foundation of living and of agrarian ecosystems. FBN’s research areas cover knowledge driven basic research as well as problem- oriented applied research on the biology of farm animals. By combining both approaches, it is expected to contribute to ascertaining sustainable agrarian production. The sustainable provision with livestock-borne products requires the holistic understanding of expression and differentiation of performance traits using a systemic research approach which looks at biological processes incorporating interactions with diverse farm animal environments and production systems. FBN’s disciplinary breadth guarantees an indepth interdisciplinary investigation of future-oriented research areas such as the production of consumer-oriented foods, the efficient use of agricultural resources, animal welfare as well as livestock keeping systems which satisfy animal and environmental requirements. A better understanding of genetic and physiologic principles of different functions of the animal’s organism is expected to result in innovative processes, technologies, the development of products as well as rationales for legislative regulations and subsidies. FBN research is supposed to lay a foundation for additional benefits and labour perspectives as well as new approaches of risk assessment for livestock and environment of novel production systems and to allow a better evaluation of the quality of livestock-borne products. |
