The current cost of sequencing a human genome is estimated between $10 million (€8.3 million) and $25 million. Alternative sequencing methods have been described, although, no technology has yet replaced the use of bacterial vectors and Sanger sequencing as the main generators of sequence information. The massive increase of large-scale DNA-sequencing projects in recent years has started a search for new advanced alternative sequencing methods in order to get faster and less expensive technology to fulfill the needs of medicine. The applications of such innovative technology are for example oncology research, understanding third world diseases, and providing fast responses to bioterrorism threats and diagnostics.
