Scientists produce neurons from human skin

Date: 25.2.2007

Scientists from Université Laval’s Faculty of Medicine have succeeded in producing neurons in vitro using stem cells extracted from adult human skin. This is the first time such an advanced state of nerve cell differentiation has been achieved from human skin, according to lead researcher Professor François Berthod. This breakthrough could eventually lead to revolutionary advances in the treatment of neurodegenerative illnesses such as Parkinson’s disease. Berthod and his team described the method used to produce these neurons in a recent issue of the Journal of Cellular Physiology. The researchers used skin obtained from plastic surgery procedures. They subjected these skin samples to various treatments in order to extract neuron precursor cells, which they then proceeded to cultivate in vitro. Skin itself does not contain neurons, which are hosted in the spinal cord, but contains only their extensions, called "axons." The researchers’ challenge was thus to produce neurons from undifferentiated cells rather than multiply neurons from nerve cells...... read more "www.eurekalert.org":[ http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2007-02/ul-spn022207.php]

Embryonic Stem Cells Turned Into Cerebellar Neurons By Chemical Cues - In order to differentiate and specialize, stem cells require very specific environmental cues in a very specific order, and scientists have so far been unable to prod them to go through each of the necessary steps (19.3.2007)

New Hope For Parkinson's in Understanding Causes Of Cell Death - Uncontrolled neuronal death in the brain often gives rise to neurodegenerative illnesses like Parkinson or Alzheimer disease (18.3.2007)

Deconstructing Brain Wiring, One Neuron at a Time - Researchers have long said they won’t be able to understand the brain until they can put together a “wiring diagram” – a map of how billions of neurons are interconnected (2.3.2007)

Gene therapy beats skin cancer in two men: study - Fifteen patients did not respond to the treatment, however, and the researchers and other experts said more work was needed to make it more effective (10.9.2006)

Blood vessels grown from skin - Blood vessels grown from skin Two kidney dialysis patients from Argentina have received the world’s first blood vessels grown in a laboratory dish from snippets of their own skin, a technique that doctors hope will someday offer a new source of arteries and veins for diabetics and other patients (21.2.2006)
