Description: | The National Veterinary Research Institute was established in 1945 as a scientific institution of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The major mission of the Institute is applied research in veterinary medicine, particularly concentrating on prophylaxis and diagnosis of infectious diseases, including zoonoses, and on hygiene and toxicology of food of animal origin. Additionally, the Institute runs postgraduate training and specialisation for veterinarians in the Veterinary Centre of Postgraduate Training, acts as the Reference Laboratory responsible for the diagnosis of animal infectious diseases and control of food of animal origin and feedstuffs, evaluates the quality of veterinary biologicals, participates in drug and vaccine licensing process and provides the expertise service for the Veterinary Administration. The Institute comprises units representing basic scientific disciplines such as bacteriology, virology, biochemistry, parasitology, pathology, toxicology, pharmacology, physiopathology of reproduction, food and feeding stuffs hygiene, and units involved in research on diseases of particular animal species (cattle, sheep, horses, swine, poultry, dogs, cats, fur animals, fish, and honey bees) or diseases of special significance for animal husbandry (e.g. foot-and-mouth disease). |
