In 1994 a company V.F.Humulus was founded and it is joint-venture of japanese brewery Sapporo, Nichietsu Corporation and TOP HOP Ltd.
The main sphere of activities is research of hops, especially virus elimination in Saaz hops - Osvald´s clones Nos. 31,72 and 114, to improve competitive advantages of Saaz fine aroma hop on the world market.
The company V.F.Humulus has its residence in Žatec (Saaz) however research laboratories and two experimental hop-gardens are located in the village Deštnice (15 km far from Žatec) and were built in 1997. In Deštnice worked also Dr. Karel Osvald who was the famous czech hop scientist and so we try to continue in tradition. Both experimental hop-gardens are in traditional hop area which is very suitable and typical for Saaz semi-early red bine hop.
At present there are two departments in laboratories:
a) biological,
elimination of botanical virus and viroids in Saaz hop Osvald´s clones,
propagation virus-free plants by the method in-vitro,
testing for occurency of botanical viruses in hop plants by the method ELISA ,
monitoring of reinfection in productive hop-gardens,
b) chemical,
chemical analyses of hops for hop-producers,
monitoring of brewing value of Saaz fine aroma hops - virus free and also standard hops,
evaluation of each hop crops from the viewpoint of brewing valuable matters.
The company V.F.Humulus cooperates very closely with famous czech breweries Pilsner Urguell and Budweiser Budvar in the sphere of verification and checking of virus-free hops and so we follow and avaluate contributions of virus-free hops for brewing beer.
A japanese brewery SAPPORO requested only virus-free Saaz fine aroma hops and they are very satisfied with it. |
