Vaccine hope for developing world

Date: 30.1.2007

The new "Trojan horse" vaccines use genetically-engineered viruses which get inside cells and stimulate a strong immune response by the body to the killer diseases. And they are being adapted to use technology which will allow them to be transported to remote parts of the developing world without needing refrigeration, making them cheaper and easier to distribute. The multi-million pound project is being funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates' Grand Challenges in Global Health initiative. It aims to find breakthroughs to major health challenges in the developing world. Professor Adrian Hill, director of the Jenner Institute at Oxford University, said the new generation of vaccines were different from traditional approaches which used a killed or weakened version of a virus to stimulate the production of antibodies - a method which has failed in the treatment of diseases such as HIV...... Biodegradable Microspheres Deliver Time Release Vaccines, Stimulate Different Immune Response - A new vaccine delivery system using microspheres of a biodegradable polymer may not only reduce the need for booster shots in some cases, but also appears to stimulate an immune response that traditional vaccines do not (6.3.2007)

Canine parvovirus-like particles, a novel nanomaterial for tumor targeting - Specific targeting of tumor cells is an important goal for the design of nanotherapeutics for the treatment of cancer (13.2.2007)

The multi-tasking reovirus - In the past couple of years, researchers at Oncolytics Biotech have been developing a harmless virus as a potent cancer killer, but they have also been accumulating data that suggests in addition to directly killing tumor cells, the reovirus may prime the immune system to mount a separate, powerful and long lasting defence against cancer (11.2.2007)
