The main infrastructure of the theoretical fields of study at the Faculty of Medicine is centred upon a modern, newly built University Campus. Some of the teaching premises also remain in the original, historical building at the centre of Brno in Komenského náměstí (Comenius Square). In particular, there are centres for non-medical fields of study. The principal clinical teaching centres are at two faculty hospitals: Brno Faculty Hospital and Saint Anne’s Faculty Hospital. Two clinics are also located at Masaryk’s Oncology Institute. The largest part of Brno Faculty Hospital, the department of adult medicine, is in the immediate vicinity of the University Campus, thus creating a unique complex (hospital, centres for theoretical fields of study and research, and the Faculty of Science).
The Faculty of Medicine provides education in two Master’s programmes of study: General Medicine and Dentistry. We have three accredited Bachelor’s programmes of study: Specializations in Health Science, Nursing, and Midwifery. In the Specializations in Health Science programme of study, we offer the following subject areas: Physiotherapy, Nutrition, Optics and Optometry, Radiology for Assistants, and training for Laboratory Assistants. The Nursing programme of study has just one discipline: General Nursing, and likewise, the Midwifery programme has only one accredited study area: Midwifery.
Graduates from certain other Bachelor’s programmes have the option to continue studying on the follow-up Master’s programme, Specializations in Health Science, specialising in Physiotherapy, Intensive care, Dietetics, Optometry, and Gerontology Nursing.
In the academic year 2011/2012 there will be approximately 4,685 students taking Master’s, Bachelors and follow-up programmes, out of which 400 fee-paying students are studying General Medicine and Dentistry. We cooperate with many countries, with which we have contracts, e.g. Great Britain, Ireland, Germany, Portugal, Greece, Norway, Sweden, Cyprus, Malta, Spain, Israel, Taiwan, USA, and Canada.
Tuition at the Faculty of Medicine takes place at 49 clinics, 17 institutes, and 8 departments; there are 5 more specialized workplaces within the Faculty. In addition, 91 professors, 90 senior lecturers, and 326 other academic workers (teachers/tutors) work there.
A significant proportion of the work at the Faculty of Medicine comprises scientific research. There are more than 120 research orientated projects carried out every year and this number is still increasing. Research-targeted projects aim at a whole range of areas of medical research and are realized in close partnership with the Faculty hospitals. The Faculty has many years’ experience and success in effectively completing and administering projects associated with the Czech Science Foundation, the Ministry of Health, the Czech Academy of Science, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, etc. Individual researchers have taken part in projects during the 6th and 7th terms of the core programme and other programme components, such as Erasmus, Socrates, and Leonardo. A detailed list of these is available at http://www.muni.cz/med/research. Since 2008, the Faculty of Medicine has actively taken part in the preparation of projects relating to the operational programmes. At present 12 actual courses are run, presented as part of the Education for Competitiveness Operational Programme. Its outstanding research teams from the fields of molecular medicine and neurology participated in the CEITEC (Central European Institute of Technology) project, and teams focusing on bio-molecular and cell engineering have joined another important ICRC (International Clinical Research Centre) project.
