As part of the growth in biotechnology, cell culture has become a major pillar in academic research and the biopharmaceutical industry. However, obtaining a viable culture from a tissue sample, human or animal, and maintaining it for experimental, diagnostic or therapeutic purposes can be quite a challenge.
Currently, many laboratories are focusing on the biological behaviour and function(s) of a cell population in relation to its genetic profile. As knowledge of cell biology has increased, a wider variety of cell cultures have been employed for use. For example, cell culture is playing an increasingly more significant role in drug discovery.
As such, new experimental requirements have created a demand for more imaginative cell culture device methodology. It is therefore essential that a database of such be established to help develop and disseminate nationally and internationally recent cell culture techniques.
