The newly established Department is pursuing several programs of scientific research in various fields. Within the branches of biochemistry, clinical biochemistry and pathological physiology the Department deals with research on new methods in the area of enzymatic catalysis with the aim to apply the results to investigation of pharmaceuticals for Alzheimer disease. Another topic studied is the role of free oxygen radicals in causing the infarct of myocardium and search for new markers of oxidation stress. New methods are being developed using HPLC to determine markers of oxidation stress and risk markers of atherosclerosis in biological materials. In the area of immunochemistry possibilities are examined for isolation and purification of immunoglobulins and enzymes with help of bioaffinity chromatography.
