University of Ostrava

The University of Ostrava was established in 1991, but its foundations were laid earlier. Its roots can be dated back to 1953, when a Pedagogical College was opened in Opava to train teachers for what was known as the second level of primary school (from the 5th to the 8th grade). In 1959 the Pedagogical Institute was established in Ostrava. In 1964 it received a statute as an independent Pedagogical Faculty.
